"To provide an outstanding, unique, and coveted educational opportunity for the young women of our nation that instills the basic ideals and principles of American government through the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation citizenship training programs."

Under the leadership of Director Kristi Hensley, the 70th session of American Legion Auxiliary Colorado Girls State was an exceptional and memorable week. Held at University of Northern Colorado from June 11-17, this year’s theme of #TheSuffrageIsReal infused the session with a message of empowerment for all 184 young ladies who attended. Throughout the week, the delegates campaigned for offices, wrote and debated legislation and heard presentations by dynamic speakers, including Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne, elected officials, and a Molly Brown historical re-enactor. The delegates also worked on various projects to aid veterans – tying fleece blankets for the VA, sending thank you notes to deployed troops and folding pocket flags for active duty service members.

We were able to add a seventh day to this year’s session, which allowed us a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Colorado State Capitol where the delegates had the opportunity to pass their bills on the floor of the Senate and House of Representatives. This opportunity illustrated to the delegates that the seats their legislators’ currently occupy could also be theirs one day. On the last night of the session, we were honored to host 9News reporter, Anastasiya Bolton, as our keynote speaker. She spoke to the delegates and their families of the importance of voting, something she values about being an American citizen after growing up in Russia. At our closing ceremony, ALA CGS staff presented Blue Star Banners to all eligible delegates.

Following such an amazing session, and along with my Assistant Director, Marissa Sotomayor, I’m excited and honored to continue the mission of teaching civic engagement, empowerment, and respect and gratitude for our veterans to today’s young women. The 2018 ALA CGS session will once again be at University of Northern Colorado and will run from June 10-16. The theme will be “Be the Change” as it’s my belief that any good that’s done in the world starts with each individual person. We have lots of fun and impactful activities planned for next session, including having our final legislative session at The Capitol again, as well as welcoming back Colorado Krav Maga to teach our delegates some self-defense tactics.

We would love to increase the number of delegates for next year’s session, but we need your help getting the word out. Check out
http://www.alacolorado.com/girls-state for more information and our online delegate application. Also, please feel free to email any questions to Rhonda at dept-sec@alacolorado.com or me at rvh.alacgs@gmail.com. With your help, we’ll have another amazing ALA CGS session!
