Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO
Welcome to the American Legion Auxiliary's
Colorado Girls State 2023!
Dear Applicants to ALA Colorado Girls State 2023,
My name is Megan Valliere, and I am both humbled and unbelievably excited to serve as the
Director for this year’s session of ALA Colorado Girls State. As we celebrate 75 years of ALACGS
with this upcoming session, I am thrilled to share a program that I hope will provide both civic
education and camaraderie, a deeper appreciation for our government and lifelong bonds with
fellow leaders.
I attended American Legion Auxiliary Colorado Girls State as a delegate in 2017, and I have returned as a staff member every year since, soaking in the traditions and connections that are integral features of our
program. That week six years ago changed my life in ways that I can’t even begin to describe,
and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve this program and all of you as future delegates.
Every year I have returned as a staff member, I have left feeling more confident and hopeful
about our world, our country, and our communities because of the drive, compassion, kindness,
intellect, and diligence that our delegates routinely display. You are our future, and I am humbled
to be a small part of your journey as you grow into the strong women that it will take to change
our world for the better.
Our program is a rigorous experience where you will learn about state and local government,
elections, the legislative process, parliamentary procedure, civic engagement, patriotism, and
more. Each day will be packed with opportunities for learning and engagement that you can
bring with you back to your communities at the end of the week. The things that make ALA CO Girls
State so special, though, are not the lessons in government we teach (though, as a local
government practitioner, I find them riveting). What makes our program special are the
traditions that we have and the connections you will make. One tradition of which I am
particularly fond is that each year, the Director chooses a theme for the program. I am proud to
share that this year’s theme is "Knowledge is Power". I believe that knowledge in all its forms,
whether it originates from experiments, textbooks, oral histories, personal experiences, or
somewhere else, will always help us understand who we are and what our communities need to
thrive. I implore you to reflect on the types of knowledge you want to gain, the types that you
can share with others, and the knowledge that we can build together during our time at ALA
Colorado Girls State.
The entire ALA Colorado Girls State staff and I are ecstatic to welcome a new delegation of ALACGS
participants for our 75th annual program. It is my honor, pleasure, and joy to help coordinate the
program and share it each year with a new group of upcoming leaders. I look forward to
meeting each of you, and if you have any questions, comments, or concerns in the meantime,
please don’t hesitate to reach out.
All my best,
Megan “Meggs” Valliere
