UVC AffiliationThe United Veterans Coalition of Colorado:
On April 28, 2020, I, Tracy Trujillo, as Department President, authorized the ALA Department of Colorado to apply to become an affiliate member of the United Veterans Coalition of Colorado (UVC) to further support our American Legion Department of Colorado’s legislative efforts in the state and federally. The judgment to submit the application was based on the ALA’s support of The American Legion as defined in the Preamble of the ALA Constitution: For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes: To uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in all wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy; to participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of The American Legion; to consecrate and sanctify our association by our devotion to mutual helpfulness. (alaforveterans.org/About/Preamble-to-the-ALA-Constitution) The American Legion Department of Colorado has worked tirelessly for over 40 years with the UVC for the betterment of veterans, and active duty military; and their families. To become an affiliate member of the UVC would allow the ALA to not only support The American Legion’s stance on veteran and active military personnel issues; but, it also allows us to promote awareness to our 4,000 plus members of upcoming legislative issues. On May 12, 2020, the UVC voted to accept The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Colorado as an affiliate (non-voting) member. And, on May 17, 2020, the ALA Department of Colorado voted to formally adopt the auxiliary partnership between the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Colorado and the UVC (Department Executive Board Minutes – May 17,2020). Dual member and Past Department Commander, Terri Clinton, as the ALA Department of Colorado Legislative Chair, will be our representative to the UVC. PDC Clinton will forward any information from the UVC to Department Headquarters to be distributed per procedure. To learn more about the UVC, please visit their website: https://uvcoc.org/. The UVC is a non-partisan, non-political organization and no dues are required for membership. 2020 American Legion Regional Tournaments and 2020 American Legion World Series cancelled
From National Email Americanism Director Jill Druskis April 7, 2020:
With the unpredictability of the current worldwide COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the manner in which the virus spreads, its duration and the resulting public health regulations and restrictions across the nation, The American Legion is facing an improbable situation. The Americanism Commission, in consultation with National Commander James William “Bill” Oxford, announces cancellation of all 2020 American Legion Baseball national tournaments, inclusive of all eight 2020 Regional Tournaments and the 2020 American Legion World Series. The awarding of American Legion Baseball scholarships and Samsung American Legion Scholarships for 2020 have also been completely suspended (Samsung American Legion Scholarships awarded in years prior to 2020 will continue to be paid out to students upon their requests to receive their funds). Many baseball coaches are unable to complete prerequisite league play scheduled between May and July due to the closure of schools and playing facilities across the nation. In August, more than 500 players, coaches and volunteer staff are scheduled to travel and participate in eight regional tournaments and the American Legion World Series, collectively attracting thousands of fans and spectators. Many of these individuals are of a high-risk demographic. Currently, there are 32 American Legion Boys State and 9 American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs who have found it necessary to cancel their 2020 programs due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, with several more having indicated that cancellation is probable. It is through the Boys State and Girls State programs that youth are afforded eligibility to apply for Samsung American Legion Scholarships. Many, many Boys State and Girl State delegates did not pursue their applications for 2020 Samsung American Legion Scholarships as a result of the scores of Boys State and Girls State program cancellations. The decision to cancel was extremely difficult but deemed necessary, first and foremost in the interest of health and safety, and in the face of uncertainty. As Americanism Commission Richard Anderson noted, “These times are unparalleled. And while it is distressing to think of all those youth across the nation who are disappointed to learn of the cancellation of American Legion programs this year, it would be a much, much greater tragedy if even just one of those youth were to fall ill during a program. The Americanism Commission feels this is the right thing to do.” |

Membership Update Another week in our homes for many of us. So many cancellations, so much illness in many of our state and nation wide. I know how hard this time is for everybody. Please continue to call YOUR Unit's members you have not heard from. Check on their health and well being. Offer to bring them groceries, puzzles, games, etc.(using social distancing of course). Let them know you are thinking of them. While numbers are important for our organization, our members are the most important. We need to take care of one another. Please continue to find those members that have not renewed. I have received many questions regarding what to do since our Department headquarters are closed. Some questioned if they cannot get the membership mailed in. I am reminding you, that Susan, our Department Secretary is there about two times a week at this time. She's continuing keeping me in the loop as we turn in those Membership Transmittal and Unit's updates regarding Membership. THANK YOU ALL for your continued work, EVERYDAY, on connecting, Buddy Checks and your continued communications within your unit. I encourage that EACH Unit President and the Unit’s Membership Chairman to work together and to get that membership mail to Department ASAP. If you have any questions regarding Membership and need an answer asap, my cell phone number is listed below. TEXT is best as I do live in the Mtns and weather permitting, can be spotty. Also, remind your members that they can also call National HDQ and pay their dues over the phone, or pay online still as well. If you need steps by steps on how to do so, reach me... I will assist you. I hope to see many of you soon! As always, don't hesitate to reach me anytime!
