October News Brief

10/16/2016

I am sure by now that you have all started working on your Children and Youth Program for this year.  Have each of you signed up for the monthly E-Bulletin from National?  Several times during the year the C & Y Committee will have articles in those E-Bulletins.  Go the national website www.alaforveterans.org.

Below is information for your Children and Youth Program.

  • Star Spangled Kids”: This is an ALA program to educate children and youth on the history of the United States from the aspect of patriotism, Americanism and the U.S. Constitution.  Maybe you can offer to present a program at your local schools.  Teachers are usually receptive to having people come in and do educational presentations.
  • Youth Hero Awards/Good Deed Awards: This is an ALA program to recognize youth who demonstrate a heroic act of physical valor or who exemplify community service in action.  Read the newspapers, contact your schools, watch the TV news or listen to the radio to learn of any youth who has performed a heroic act.  Nominate them for the Youth Hero/Good Deed Award.
  • Josh dogs: An American Legion Family alliance, GI Josh is a plush dog and accompanying storybook used to help ease separation fears for the military children.  Check with local physicians about presenting Josh Dogs to young children who are facing hospitalization for the first time.

  • Maybe your Unit can hold a party for the youth or give them items such as a flashlight, glow stick, reflective tape, etc. to make their evening of fun safe for them.

The American Legion has a brochure called “Make Halloween Safe” why not distribute to the elementary students.

It is not too early to help promote the Oratorical Contest and Americanism Essay Contests in your schools.Work with the Americanism Chairman to help make this successful.

Safety Tips for trick or Treat
H Halloween, the last day of October, has a special significance for children, who dress in funny or ghostly costumes and knock on neighborhood doors shouting “Trick or Treat”
A Avoid trick-or- treating alone. Walk in groups or with an adult.
P
Put/fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
P Parents, make the most of your Halloween season by keeping as enjoyable and safe for your Kids as you can.
Y You should only purchase costumes that are made of flame retardant material. Swords, Knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible.

H Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK And don’t run from house to house.
A Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
L Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
L Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
O Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic.
W Wear well fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.
E Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Eat only factory wrapped treats.
E Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses.
N Never walk near lit candles or cut through back alleys and fields.
